Chicago-Area Skunk Population Raises A Stink

Kaulback has watched all sorts of wildlife traipse across his yard over the nearly 50 years he's lived in Des Plaines. This is good news for Brancato, because skunks can spray the oily substance they use to defend themselves up to 15 feet — and their aim is good. This year has been a bad year for skunks. "We've very lucky in that way, because we're going to at least be able to approach the skunk that is a little less likely to spray," Brancato says. Brancato and Owen find the skunk in a small cage in homeowner Richard Kaulback's leafy backyard. Brancato says skunk populations can grow large because they don't really have any natural predators. "Before, we had a lot of raccoons, but this is the first time we've had so many skunks. This is the second [or third] skunk we've got.

If the bird was just stunned, wait about 45 minutes to an hour, then take the box outside and see if the bird can fly off on its own. If it can not, if it is still very groggy, or has an obviously broken wing or other noticeable injury, then replace it in the box and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Here is a great website that explains why birds fly into windows, and how to prevent it: http://www. it might see its own reflection in the window and thinks there is another bird there. Do not use cloth towel, the bird can get its nails caught in the material. Keep all animals, kids and......

Squirrel Killer Terrorizes Washington Square Park | AnimalTourism News

Everyone from the wildlife rehabilitator community to dog people, Bernie Goetz (subway vigilante/squirrel lover) to Parks Enforcement Police is now on the lookout for the willowy brunette and her dogs. “As I walking through the park, I came upon people gathered around a dying young squirrel,” said a local licensed wildlife rehabilitator who treated two of the injured squirrels. Area squirrel lovers think her name is Lena, that she lives on Barrow Street (someone followed her home), visits the park at 8 and 5 and has two dogs, a German shepherd and a shepherd mix. One squirrel with two broken legs was found near the  Hangman’s Tree and taken to a veterinarian that specializes in wildlife.   The woman and dog had just left the park. “[The] chess players saw the dog attack. At least five squirrels have been killed so far in front of Greenwich Village park goers and one turned up with broken legs. Squirrel lovers around New York City’s Washington Square Park say there is a killer on the loose....
