When I opened it, it was full of Barbie clothes that she had made just for me. I loved them and was so appreciative of them, but also it made me feel very special that she thought of me and took the time to make my doll some clothes. She also watched her elders sew and now as a grandmother, she has created a line of handcrafted clothing for the wildly popular American Girl dolls. “I remember my grandmother making matching dresses for my cousin and me. ”. By creating handmade clothes for little girls’ dolls, Bishop also is recreating a bit of her own childhood. “I love reliving that moment in the eyes of little girls when they get new doll outfits. I grew up watching my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother sew. “When I was young and into Barbie dolls, my aunt who lived in Minnesota mailed me a package. When Janet Bishop of Runnells was an eighth-grader, she learned how to sew in her home economics class at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School in Des Moines. My great-grandmother had a non-electric, treadle Singer sewing machine.
